Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to get you thinking critically about your own culture or identity and to apply sociological concepts to understanding your own life. Also note that this assignment is a key building block that can go into your Sociological Autobiography that you will write later this semester.
You have 3 choices here. Choose one of the following and write a blog entry that is 500-1,000 words long.
1- Spend some time thinking about the culture that you grew up within. What are key aspects of your culture? You might think about some of the key values and norms within your culture. How do these values and norms get reinforced? How is your culture different from at least one other culture? How were you socialized to accept these values and norms? How has your culture shaped who you are? How might you be different if you were raised in a different culture?
2- What is your identity? How has it come to be? How does your identity vary with time and place? How do you constantly shape and re-shape your identity?
3- NOTE: It appears this website is currently experiencing problems and so you may not be able to choose this option. Bummer! Visit the Dream Activist website (http://www.dreamactivist.org/about/our-stories/). This is a website where undocumented immigrant students organize and share their stories related to the American Dream. Read at least 5 of these stories. Write your blog post about the American Dream, incorporating some of what you learned by visiting this website. Some questions you might ponder: What is the American Dream? How is the American Dream related to your culture? How is it related to the culture of the undocumented students you read about? Is the American Dream real or not? How so and how not? How is it socially constructed and reshaped over time? How does the idea of the American Dream relate to our capitalist economy? to our political system? to our education system?
